Tridod - Your free Web site and Geocities
- Your free Web site
Both Tripod and Geocities provide you with 2meg to build
your website .... FREE. They each use slightly different approaches, so
you should check to see which one provides the service best suited to your
needs. (I prefer Tripod's approach, but I use the mail forwarding service
at Geocities). You are given direct access to your area to update and change
it as often as you like. For basic pages, use their Homepage builders,
for more advanced, build offline and upload with CuteFTP. (Some people
attempt to build XXX pages at these sites, but they are deleted very quickly
- so don't bother - if you really want to build a XXX site, email
me, I'll tell you where you can do it for FREE).
-
Crosswinds.
Crosswinds provides UNLIMITED free space for your web site providing that
it does not have commercial content.
-
Adult Sites. Yes, there
are free adult sites available. I know about 2 of them. I cannot
link to adult sites from here - so drop me an email and I will tell you
where to find them!
-
The Phrantic Project
Provides 3Mb to build your free web page. I didnt
investigate too far, as the hosts are heavily into Java, forms and effects.
(I like sites that are quick to load). Everyone to their own taste, but
their site creators put me off. I am sure the presentaion of this host
will appeal to many, its just not my style. So have a look, and if you
like it, I will be more than happy to publish your review HERE.

Finding Advertisers
Make a little money from your site by placing a few adverts
on it. But a few tips before you start:
-
Get your page up and running with plenty of visitors first. (Read my
Getting Visitors section). Many advertisers will
drop your site if you aren't generating enough hits for them. It will be
much harder to allure them back a second time around.
-
Don't rely on the income from the advertisers to pay for your fees.
They often pay late and sometimes not at all.
-
Select advertisers that are somewhat related to the theme of your site,
your visitors are more likely to click on these (and thus generate revenue
for you).
-
Dont get carried away. Your visitors wont come back if you page takes
ten minutes to load because of all the advertising banners. Pick one or
two quality advertisers - dont go for quantity.
-
Be careful of where some of your links to other sites lead. Some advertisers
use Browser-Bots to search every page and every link at your site to make
sure you dont have any questionable material. For example, this site was
rejected by some advertisers for this very reason. I asked for clarification
and found that it was because my link below to The
Adult Money Report carries links to advertisers
of adult sites. These links in turn led to the banners that would need
to be placed on the site's pages, and these led to the actual adult sites.
Now, I would definitely not consider this an adults-only site, but I was
rejected because of the links.
-
The Adult Money
Report Where to find advertisers (mainly Adult XXX companies) for
your site. A very comprehensive list that describes each of the companies,
payment methods, type of product, etc. It also has a forum for Webmasters
to discuss their experiences with using these companies.

statistics for you: Hits this month (for each day), by day of week, by
week, and by month. Currently the actual 'count of hits' cannot be displayed
directly on your page. Click on the 'IC' logo at the bottom
of my home page to see the statistics gathered for this site. (You
can password protect the statistics so that they can't be accessed by your
visitors).
-
Digits.com Provides
both a free and a commercial service. Due to heavy loads, they are not
providing a free service at the moment. Keep checking.
Getting Visitors
Having created your work of art, you can sit back
and admire it and tell a few friends, but how do you get strangers to know
about your site? And if you are going to try to pick up a few dollars from
placing some adverts, you are going to want visitors - lots of them! Here's
how you attract them:
-
Add your site to the popular Search
Engines (see section below). But remember, there are thousands
of new sites added every day and there are already 30-40 million sites.
Unless you have a very unique site, you will be a long way down the list.
-
Advertise you site in the appropriate NewsGroup. Be very
careful though. Some groups frown on any type of promotion. Others accept
it if your content is appropriate. Read all the contents at the group,
and you will quickly determine if you should be there or not. Remember
though, messages in Newsgroups only have a certain "life" and are deleted
after a period of time. You will need to go back regularly to re-post your
site promotion.
-
Search for other sites that have a similar theme to yours
and ask to exchange links. (Most of the sites that I refer to in these
pages carry a similar link to me. If they carry my banner, I carry theirs.
If they have a text link to me, I provide a text link to them).
-
If you create a banner for your site for exchange purposes,
make sure it clearly states what your site is about. Also some banner exchange
programs have clear guidelines about the size. The most commonly accepted
banner has the following attributes: GIF format, 400x40 pixels, maximum
of 7k, NO animation and NO transparrent content. See Banner
Creation below.
